Alcoa began as a company town for the Aluminum Company of America, and many neighborhoods, including the Springbrook Park area, have 1920s to 1940s homes on tree-lined streets. Common projects are remodels of these older homes, roof replacements, estate cleanouts, and debris from larger renovations the City will not collect at the curb.

Permits and right-of-way
For building permits or questions about placing anything in a street, contact City of Alcoa Building and Codes at (865) 380-4730, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A container on a private driveway avoids most right-of-way questions.
The City asks residents not to place brush or bulky waste in the street, so keep both the container and any curb piles behind the curb or edge of pavement.
City brush and bulky pickup
Alcoa collects brush on the first and third weeks of each month and bulky waste on the second and fourth weeks, on your regular garbage day, for residential properties only. Items must be out by 6:30 a.m.; bulky items no earlier than the Friday before the collection week.
Brush includes tree trimmings and clean, unpainted wood scraps; pieces over 8 inches in diameter are not collected. Bulky waste covers furniture, appliances with Freon removed, cardboard, scrap metal, and bagged leaves and grass.
The City does not collect material left by paid contractors and states that large demolition and construction projects need a roll-off dumpster. Sanitation: (865) 380-4800.
Disposal and drop-off sites
The Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Sanitary Landfill at 240 Long Powers Rd, Friendsville, is run by Alcoa Public Works and only accepts waste from Blount County residents and businesses, with proof of residency or job location at check-in. Posted tipping fees are $60 per ton for household and construction or demolition waste with a $15 minimum, $25 per mattress or box spring, and $20 per refrigerated appliance. It no longer takes logs or stumps over 24 inches and closes at 4:30 p.m. Office: (865) 995-2998.
A recycling drop-off center is located at the landfill.
